32 Years old Somaliland hit another rock bottom. Truth was the first casualty and it died as Somaliland was born. So much with the much touted democracy as only one parliamentary election took place since birth, and with not many legs to stand on, it died suddenly with Muse Bihi’s election.
Then it was clan diversity that suddenly evaporated. The Warsangeli, with zero representation in Somaliland politics, were the first to head for the exits. As for the rest, it was just a matter of time.
Fast forward to today and Somaliland as a state is in shambles as the last vestige of clan diversity evaporates with Abdirisak Khalif, who hours ago tendered his resignation as Speaker of Somaliland parliament, as a member of Somaliland parliament, and also quit as a member of Waddani Political Party, and all together quit all politics that is Somaliland. Clan diversity is no more in Somaliland.
The only other clan outside of the Isaaq clan that today remains in the Somaliland parliament is the Gadabursi clan of Awdal. But Awdal doesn’t remain in Somaliland out of their own volition, but under the heavy hand of Somaliland Security forces and economic control. Borama today, as Laascaanood before 2022 Blue Revolution uprising, is under occupation, and Borama’s own Blue Revolution simmers slowly. Awdal State of Somalia with a president-in-exile is also a force to be reckoned with.
Intra-Isaaq clan politics is no bonanza either, as clan hostilities are slowly erupting between the dominant and the much persecuted Garxajis clan and the ‘Baha Iidoor’ group of clans led by Habar Awal, President Muse Bihi’s clan. Within the Baha Iidor too the pot is boiling in Hargeisa, as last night’s clan bloodshed between the Habar Awal and the Arab has already proven.
The next chapter in the shambling politics of Hargeisa is the election of the next speaker of the house. Will the Garxajis, the majority of what remains of Somaliland and also of the house, win the Speakership, or will Habar Awal one more time make the Gadabursi clan look like a political stakeholder in the political disarray that is Somaliland of today? Or will it be a Speaker from the Issa clan out of nowhere, as Ismail Omar Guelleh is said to suggest to keep driving a wedge between the Awdalites?
With Hassan Sheikh arriving Djibouti today for the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State expect another tripartite meeting in Djibouti between IOG, Hassan Sheikh and Muse Bihi to revise the failed plan of December 2022.
