Al-Shabaab fighters have launched an assault on the elite Duufan (Storm) unit of the National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA) in the Dayniile district of Mogadishu, Daljir Media has learned.

Per security sources, the elite Storm (Duufaan) unit was on patrol in the Beerta Ali Mahdi when they came under attack, with the commander of the unit confirmed dead.

The militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released on media outlets affiliated with the militant group.

Duufaan (Storm) unit of NISA was initially formed under the administration of former president Farmaajo and consists of Al-Shabaab defectors that have surrendered to the government and merged with the country’s security agency.
