The Ministry of Defense (MOD) have confirmed that 14 officers are in custody on suspicion of being involved in the deadly suicide bombing targeting the Jalle Siyaad military academy in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Deputy Minister of Defense Abdiifatah Qasim confirmed the development while speaking to MP’s at the Lower House of Parliament and added on that those in custody include commanders of the Jalle Siyaad military academy as well as low level officers.

“A joint committee of officials from the Ministry of Defense, NISA and the Police force are overseeing the investigation”, the Minister went on to say.

On July 24th, a large scale suicide bombing ripped through the Jalle Siyaad military academy leaving dozens of government soldiers dead and the manner in which it took place sparked deep levels of suspicion, possibly an inside job.

The events that transpired following the attack lead to public backlash as the Somali government attempted to censor coverage of the attack in a bid to hide the truth from the public as initially reported by Daljir Media.

It’s unclear how the investigation into the attack will end, but there are concerns that the Somali government will try to bury the case under the rug, as seen with previous security incidents that raised suspicion.
