Over 30 foreign nationals where brought before an appeals court in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The foreign nationals numbering a total of 36 were previously convicted for illegally fishing in Somali territorial waters.

The prosecutors office at the appeals court in Mogadishu stated that they’ll put fourth the evidence that proves their role in illegal fishing, which previously got them convicted in the first place.

The 36 individuals where apprehended by Somalia’s coastal force after illegally fishing in Somali territorial waters without the proper documentation, licenses or the knowledge of Somali authorities.

Illegal fishing has been a problem in Somalia following the collapse of the central government in 1991, which persists to this day and can be attributed to the root cause of piracy which once plagued the Somali coast.

Western powers, as well as regional governments, have been implicated throughout the years for looting Somali territorial waters of fish and other maritime resources. the West has also been accused of dumping toxic waste in Somalia’s ocean, which in turn has had devastating effects on coastal communities.
