Armed gunmen from the Al-Qaeda linked militant group Al-Shabaab launched a brazen assault overnight targeting a Somali army outpost in the Arbacow neighborhood, situated in the Elasha-Biyaha district outside Mogadishu.

The militants launched a ground assault targeting the military outpost, which sparked an ensuing gun battle with government troops. The attackers then disappeared into the night.

The casualties are not yet known. Similarly, Al-Shabaab carried another audacious attack targeting government forces in the district of Afgooye, a mere 25 kilometers from Mogadishu.

The Somali government and its various security agencies are yet to address either of these incidents. Fear is growing in many parts of the capital city Mogadishu following an uptick in Al-Shabaab attacks.

The uptick in Al-Shabaab attacks in and around Mogadishu is a testimony to their strength, as they lay siege to the capital, and continue to simultaneously debunk government claims that Al-Shabaab is on the run.
