ABDIWELI ALI GAAS AND HIS BOMPOUS BUT ALREADY FLOUNDERING CANDIDACY ON THE GALKAYO CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Former Puntland President Abdiweli Ali Gaas who months ago declared his candidacy in Nairobi has finally landed in Galkayo and declared that on his third try he is running for the Puntland presidency.

In his first stint at the Puntland State House, Gaas, in 2014 by the thinnest of margins, defeated the failed Faroole presidency.

In his second attempt, with rampant nepotism and corruption of the highest order where Puntland infrastructure, basically came apart at the seams, where boats and ships couldn’t even dock on Bossaso Port because of sand, and where DP World funds to clean up sand from the Port where distributed as political bribes to MPs, so they may approve his cabinet, and where Galkayo-Garoowe and Garoowe-Bossaso road corridor, the lifeline of Puntland, was in utter disrepair, and EU repair funds were discreetly deposited in private personal bank accounts until the EU and Germany, because of unyielding corruption at the State House canceled the road project. Then a discredited and much hated Abdiweli Ali Gaas was in 2019 thrashed on the first round of the election, and Deni was elected President.

Now, Gaas in his third attempt, will once again run and try to unseat a highly favored President Deni; however, the landscape the former failed president returns to is so unrecognizable to him, it is as though he landed inother planet, a planet with paved roads and functioning ports; a planet without al-Shabaab assassins and without daily assassinations.

The narcissistic politician the former Governor of Mudug, a close friend of Gaas himself, warned us about is back again trying to fool the same people all over again.

It is early in the campaign, and Daljir will have a lot to say on what the people of Puntland call “the lost five years of Gaas,” but for now, let us hear what the candidate told his welcoming crowd in Galkayo.

Known as a prolific liar bordering narcissistic, Gaas upon arrival told the welcoming crowd, “I accepted your call; I came back to you, because you wanted me back. I brought back lots of ‘khayr’ and my political agenda is stability and an administration for all.”
