With everyone’s attention now on the any minute, imminent major war in Sool for the liberation of the remaining SSC-Khatumo territories, and the heightened political conflict in Garoowe by Aaranjaan led armed insurrectionists, let us remember the bloody battles of Buuhoodle and Kaalshaale (2009-2013), the Kalshaale wars as they are known, and the role or lack thereof of former President Faroole, his children and the Aaranjaan gang.

The Kalshaale wars started as soon as Abdirahman Faroole was elected on 8 January 2009. They are one of the longest and the bloodiest battles in SSC regions, all taking placing during former president Faroole’s presidency and ending when president Gaas was elected.

Why are the Kalshaale wars worthy to be remembered? With so many fatalities and massacres, and almost the capture of Buuhoodle on the morning of 25 January 2009, merely little over two weeks after Faroole was elected President of Puntland, being the most memorable, what is worthy to be remembered and never forgotten by the people of SSC and Puntland is that during the 5 years of Kalshaale wars, same as Faroole’s tenure (a coincidence?), let alone provide support to the people of Cayn region, president Faroole even refused the wounded warriors of Buuhoodle and Kalshaale to be brought to Garoowe. Neither material support nor moral advocacy was ever provided to the people of SSC by then president Faroole.

But the people of SSC weren’t alone. Galkayo was on their side. It was the city of Galkayo that took in all the wounded warriors, and that provided the moral and material support needed by the people of Buuhoodle. Faroole was so dissatisfied with the support provided to Buuhoodle by the people of Galkayo, Galkayo in return was turned into a graveyard of clan wars, and a city where anyone with a slight name recognition was targeted and assassinated by al-Shabaab. During Galkayo down days, when asked to stand with the people of Galkayo, President Faroole asked or rather ordered people of Galkayo to move their businesses to Garoowe.

Again, why is it important for the people of SSC and Puntland to remember this? Could the insurrection in Garoowe and the war in Laascaanood have any historical parallels with the Kalshaale Wars during the Faroole presidency? We will let the reader decide, but nothing happens because of sheer coincidence. But one thing is for sure, since Faroole is no longer the President of Puntland, Aaranjaan group which he is still the chairman of the board will do whatever it takes to at least drive a wedge between the people of Puntland and the liberation struggle of the people of SSC-Khatumo. It has already happened with Aaranjaan foot soldiers and sub-clan affiliates being the first to leave their defensive positions in Galkayo, and the first to just few days ago undertake an insurrection against Puntland State.

As the Honorable Abdibarre Jibril, the former Federal Government of Somalia MP, on his latest interview with Daljir indicated, there is also a business angle between Aaranjaan and Somaliland in making sure that the people of SSC never achieve their liberation goal.

“In 2020 a business deal was inked between Somaliland and Aaranjaan. It was a deal that has been in the works since during the Faroole presidency. It was to transfer the town of Tukaraq to Somaliland, so they may then turn it into a dry port for the Berbera Port. The material to build the dry port is still sitting at Berbera Port. Aaranjaan was to receive 2% commission of the monthly revenue and make sure that Bossaso Port dies on its own, and everything goes through Berbera. Taxes at Bossaso port were then raised to help Berbera Port gain business from Bossaso, and since the Emirates were in the deal too and were party to the dry port, they made sure that Bossaso Port never sees the light of day and functioned as intended,” said the former MP in his interview with Daljir Media.

For the lay person, all might not seem as they appear, and now that it is clear that President Deni isn’t interested in term extension, the Aaranjaan end result is always the same, and will remain the same as it has been since 2009: SSC regions that are under the control of Somaliland, and a Puntland, whatever remains of it, that is theirs and theirs only.
