The parliament of Puntland State of Somalia in today’s parliamentary session voted unanimously to change the name of the far eastern Gardafu region to Raas Casayr region.

With 43 parliamentarians voting in favor, Raas Caseyr was officially recognized as the new name of the province. No MP’s from Puntland’s parliament voted against the decision or abstained during the vote.

Raas Caseyr sits in the northeast tip of Puntland where the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden and is now the ninth province. The other provinces in Puntland are Bari, Nugaal, Mudug, Sool, Sanaag, Ayn, Karkaar, and Haylaan.

The Puntland regional state of Somalia was formed in 1998, just several years after collapse of the central government of Somalia. It is the first federal state to be formed in Somalia since the outbreak of the civil war.

The region has witnessed relative peace and stability compared to other regions in Somalia and has played a pivotal role in the rebuilding of governance in Somalia.
