A very bad day for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

President Hassan Sheikh is lately having bad days,  one after the other. And today was no different, as the UN Security Council (UNSC) did what was expected of the President by ordering “the immediate withdrawal of “Somaliland” security forces” from SSC-Khatumo territories.

In addition, the UNSC stated it will hold accountable those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law and violations and abuses of human rights. The Security Council also called on all donors to scale-up humanitarian assistance.

On the recently reported planting of landmines, the UNSC ordered “explosive ordinance disposal teams to assist with the removal of explosive remnants” and mines planted by Somaliland.

This wasn’t what President Hassan, Ismail Omar Guelleh (IOG) and Muse Bihi planned for during their tripartite meeting in Djibouti in December 2022. It wasn’t what President Hassan Sheikh, during his telephone conversations with Muse Bihi, told him would happen. And at the end of May, when President Hassan met SSC traditional leaders in Villa Somalia and urged them to go to Djibouti and reconcile with Muse Bihi, he didn’t expect such a UNSC statement will ever be issued.

For all intents and purposes, a new day dawned on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. But the question is, since his political capital jar is empty, will he try to build one from scratch? The short answer is no. The President is incapable of building political capital outside of his family and friends. No matter how bad today’s news was for President Hassan Sheikh or tomorrow will be, expect more bad news for the President, as he hears and sees through clan lenses only and is devoid of political judgement, but apt on taking clan vengeance.
